Kitty Kelley ends her biography with a short overview on Oprah's recent past and glance into the future of Oprah and her empire. She includes this misleading comment on Oprah and her weight:

"As she gets older, Oprah no longer expends the energy necessary to stay in shape, and she remains seventy five-pound overweight, sagging into her mother's genes after years of swearing to fight heredity." (Page 444).

It's interesting that through all her research into Oprah's life, she didn't notice the January 2009 Oprah cover where she revealed her new battle with weight gain, entitled "How Did I Let This Happen Again?"

Remembering how much news this revelation made, I'm shocked Kitty Kelly missed it during her research on Oprah.

Now only does Kitty Kelley ignore the fact that Oprah had been diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance known as hypothyroidism, but also Oprah weighed 160lbs in that infamous 2006 cover. In 2009 Oprah writes, "So here I stand, 40 pounds heavier than I was in 2006." Where did Kitty Kelly come up with the 75-lb number??

Oprah also writes in the article: "These days I've put myself back on my own priority list; I try to do at least one hour of exercise five or six days a week. As I work out, eat healthfully, and reorder my life so there's time to replenish my energy, I continue to do the spiritual and emotional work to conquer this battle once and for all."

Does that sound like someone who has given up her weight battle, Kitty Kelley? She just keeps including her own twisted characterizations and embellishments as if they were fact.

Miracles and Criticism

Kitty Kelly again uses an Oprah interview with holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel as arsenal against the talk show host:

"[Oprah] did not believe that bad things could happen to good people. Nor did she accept the anarchy of fate or wicked chaos, even bad luck. She totally dismissed good luck as having any part in her success. "Luck is a matter of preparation," she said. "I am highly attuned to my divine self." She believed that everything was dictated by holy design, including the 157 miracles she told viewers she had experienced. She told Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel that his surviving the Holocaust was a miracle, but he disagreed. "If a miracle of God to spare me, why? There were people much better than me. . . . No, it was an accident," he said. Oprah looked at him incredulously. (Page 223)

First of all, listen to how Oprah reveres Elie Wiesel, and then tell me Oprah would look at her "hero" with any sort of skepticism.



Oprah calls Elie Wisel "my hero", and says "One of the great gifts in my life to be able to sit and talk with Elie Wiesel." Of course she would believe it was a Miracle that he survived. He is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and a figure who has taught so many people about surviving through adversity and still come out professing peace. Although he is modest (a quality Kitty Kelly may not be in touch with), many people whose lives he has touched can claim it was a miracle that he survived the concentration camps.

My grandpa is a holocaust survivor, and he questions his survivorship the same as Wiesel does, saying he does not understand how he could survive and more holy, more strong, more intelligent people did not. He says there was no logic or reason, it was just random and luck. He may not believe it was a miracle that he survived, but I do!

It just completely disgusts me that Kelley would twist the words of a Holocaust survivor and his opinions on miracles and divine intervention after experiencing all the atrocities that he has experienced, and use those words against Oprah, who claims she idolizes the man.

Oprah's Crash Moment

Kitty's interpretation of the Oprah/Hermès scandal in Paris (where Oprah was denied access to the Paris store) just doesn't make sense. First, she dismisses Oprah's claims for racism and introduces several op-eds claiming Oprah was really upset for not getting celebrity treatment:

"Race was definitely the reason Oprah cited when she was barred from Hermès in Paris. She and Gayle arrived at the luxury retail store fifteen minutes after closing and expected to be admitted because they saw shoppers inside...Later Hermès said the store was preparing for a special event that evening."

"I saw it," said Gayle King, "and it was really, really very bad...We are calling it her Crash moment." (Page 385)


Kitty Kelly then juxtaposes Oprah and Gayle's version of the story with commentators' opinions criticizing their account (because obviously these reporters were there) (Page 386-387):

"An editorial in the Montreal Gazette accused Oprah of being quick to 'play the race card."

New York Times: "Oprah may have been denied a prerogative of elite status in our new gilded age--being waited on in luxury stores after hours--but had she been the victim of racism?"

Law professor at Stanford: "If the reason for Oprah's humiliation was the incident at Hermès triggered memories of her past experiences with racism...in that sense, Oprah was humiliated because of her race."


However later, Kitty Kelly mentions twice that the store had allegedly been "having problems with Northern Africans," which also may have played some influenced in Oprah's disbarment. Kitty uses this allegation to criticize Oprah for having been "unforgiving of racism but pardoned the President of Hermès after his Paris store barred her entry because of alleged "problems with Northern Africans." (Page 427)

Get your story straight Kitty! Either criticize Oprah for being upset that she didn't get her celebrity treatment and argue there was no actual racial profiling evident OR criticize Oprah for claiming racism unnecessarily but then pardoning Hermès. When you offer two separate spins on the same occurrence, both not only contradictory of each other but also hypercritical, you just look crazy.

We all have photos where we look horrible, frumpy, are not even really smiling...how would you feel if the person writing your bio took those as defining moments?

Unbelievable... wow... wow... unbelieveable...

Kitty Kelley's critique of Oprah's interview with Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel at Auschwitz is completely distorted and out of line. She writes:

"Unfortunately, the interview Oprah conducted with Elie Wiesel on that trip was, in the estimation of frontpagemag.com, "vapid". She sounded inane as she walked the icy grounds of the death camp. "Wow," she said. "Unbelievable... wow... wow... unbelieveable..." (Page 168)

To mock Oprah's reaction to seeing the ruins of the Holocaust, that millions of people were killed through systematic persecution and genocide, is completely inconsiderate and insensitive. This was not a typical sit-down "interview", it was an exploration of a place that many people will never see, but is a horribly important piece of history to remember. Oprah wanted her millions of viewers to see the rows of bunkers, the crematorium, the gas chambers, the shoes and clothes from those killed. To mock Oprah's reactions is reprehensible.

And has anyone heard of frontpagemag.com??? How does Kitty Kelley choose who to cite in her book?

I just cannot believe that Kitty Kelly is mocking someone witnessing the remains of the Holocaust. Out of all the shows to criticize, all of Oprah's reactions, all the times Oprah said penis on the air, this is the show that Kelley goes into detail critiquing?

Oprah is not interviewing him. She is walking, witnessing, and reacting to unimaginable and horrible remains. The fact that Kitty criticizes Oprah's reactions is contemptible.

Kitty continues her critique:

"Granted, the sight of ovens used to dispose of human beings challenges description, but as she interviewed Wiesel, Oprah began to sound like Little Miss Echo:
Wiesel: There were three to a bunk.
Oprah: Three to a bunk...
Weisel: Straw.
Oprah: Straw..." (Page 160)

I'm sure if I ONLY cut and pasted the phrases you repeated in a conversation, Kitty, you'd sound like "Little Miss Echo" too. That is not a transcript of dialogue, that is an exaggeration and contortion of fact.
